I had the exact same problem on my 1.5, stinks of fuel and the fuel line 
totally dried up after 4 days non use, I had to fill the carb bowl by 
pouring it in after draining the battery twice, my pump and pushrod are 
brand new.
I fixed the prob by fitting a 1 way valve* *after the pump and before the 
carb, my filter is just before the pump, now I can leave it a week and it 
starts l
like it was run yesterday, and the filter was always never quite full and 
now its brimming always, the valve was about 3 quid on ebay
