No, i do need to use both cars for a little while. I need to pick up the new one and drive it home but it has an electrical fault which means the battery goes flat overnight. (it was cheap). So i need to carry on using the old car until i fix the new one. Even then, it’s handy to be able to take a potential new owner for test drive when selling it.
I’ve just been having the fun of working out how to tax the new one as the tax is no longer transferable when you buy a car. It seems i can ask the seller for the number from the V5 and use that to get tax on it before i collect it. I’m not quite sure at what point the tax becomes invalid though, the DVLA aren’t going to know it’s been sold until the seller sends the V5 back. Tempting to leave it till the 1st July and save a months tax. But maybe they cross check the date the seller says it was sold with when i taxed it and if there’s a gap.... Hi Jim, If you are only worried about insuring it because of the DVLA rules of continuous insurance they don't seem to act immediately that you stop the insurance. When selling my wife's car it was un-insured for a couple of weeks and we never heard a peep from them. It was more of a concern that anything should happen to it in those weeks than the DVLA which may be your issue of course. We didn't declare SORN either. I’ve have found out that unlike all my previous insurance companys that General Accident won’t do a short term policy on the old car. And if i take out a new policy on the new car they will charge me £54 to cancel the policy on the old one. Can anybody recommend an insurance company to insure a Fiesta for a couple of weeks at a sensible price.
