The former... although I'd like it if this would work with any image.

What I really want, from an algorithmic standpoint, is to be able to take any source image, delay it, filter it, and recombine it with the existing image. I figure that if I can reduce the alpha in the filter section, then I could control the lifetime of the trails.

In the example of the ball, I might have a sprite generating the image of the ball, and LFOs modulating the X and Y coordinates so that it moves around on the screen.
