I read this mail in the early hours last night, and I kind of thought it was a little disrespectful toward people like myself who are not hard core coders..

I use Quartz because I cant code in odjective-c, and the fact that people spend a LOT of time doing extremely cool stuff in terms of creating patches then distributing them for FREE is completely fantastic.. When I find something useful, I email a thank you and add a link to my website... The fact that there is a healthy community of people out there who are prepared to help each other out creating patches - and spend there time and money doing cool stuff just because its ... well, cool should be encouraged ...

If someone wanted to distribute a virus, the last thing they would do is add it to a quartz patch - they want maximum coverage get it on lots of machines... sooooo they would go the usuals route of adding it something that get stopped by my spam filter... The Quartz community is pretty small, so unless there is some twisted individual out there who wants to target the artists / musicians / and generally cool people using this app - I think its relatively safe...

That said --- when I download from I site I always take a look at the postings to make sure that there is a strong user base / read any comments on a patch to check for bugs ect. And if I get any problems with the patch I take it out and put it in the trash...

.... anyway had my say lets move on. regards mark

Dear Al,
BEWARE of PLUGINS!

I innocently loaded a few without realizing that they expose your entire system to potential damage, or viruses. Architecturally, QC itself is kind of like a plug-in and a more reasonable approach would be to write your own wrapper code. There is nothing that can be accomplished by a pluig-in that can't be better
accomplished by making the 'round-trip' to some objective-c code.
Plugins are an absurd and ridiculous technique for any discussion of performance and that should
be clear to anyone who has a bit of system experience.
They do represent a way of packaging some code for sale, and I suggest that you wait until the AppStore
hosts these as a way of ensuring a 'trustworthy' source.
I might also point out that they are written in objective c and pehaps should be discussed on another
more appropriate list.
Since QC has introduced no new graphics format, performance questions might be also directed to the respective lists (quickTime,Cocoa-dev). So far, plug-ins has given license for someone to talk about
completely unrelated issues, under the rubrik of QC.
sincerely,
aram
