I have been using the Quartz Crystal extensively, daily, on many animations.
This was born out of the exact frustrations that you were having.
The workaround mentioned here with Quicktime is pretty much the defacto
workaround. The same thing may or may not work in iMovie or QTKitPlayer. It
seems that I have been able to make that work but it has been too long
ago...

This is a page of some clips which were rendered mostly, if not all, in
Quartz Crystal, at varying frame rates and encoding methods.

For my working method, being able to use Quartz Crystal to render is faster
and more intuitive than other methods. The anti-aliasing can make something
look very hi-fi, and the motion-blur is an added bonus. Also, Kineme is
extremely responsive to any suggestions or problems. Extremely.
