Tested on Nvidia 8600GT / 10.6.1, letterboxes are black, not white.
are you on 10.6.0, perhaps? Any other details?

As for a workaround, you could use a clear patch, and then render in
image with the appropriate aspect, and place that on a billboard
sized accordingly.. kinda lame though :/
Aha, I've found that if you use a Clear patch, the letterboxes change
to the patch's chosen colour. This is different to QC3 behaviour,
where the letterboxes were always black regardless of any Clear patch
colour setting, iirc.
