I've written a little utility to convert .qtz to .mov for my own purposes, and have put the code on Google Code to set it free for others to use and/or adapt. There is an executable (Mac OS X 10.6) you can download if you just want to use it, no need to download/compile the code. It's fairly basic - drag and drop a composition, specify frame rate, duration, and resolution, tweak composition params, then click render (and wait a while - it's not super fast).
