The composition and function is working ok for me in Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I've seen plugins corrupt QC's state so that things like this start malfunctioning from that point on. If you ever see a plugin that starts making the "checker background" in the Viewer look the wrong shade, or this has happened during a session, things like exports start acting unpredictably, even if things "look ok" at the moment.
