Out of curiosity: Do you use a retina display? I wonder if retina setting differences in system preferences would contribute...that said I've checked this out "over the phone".
And also, if you were to go into the "saved application state" folder in the hidden User Library and delete "com.apple.QuartzComposer.editor.savedState" folder, does it crash?
