Maybe more importantly (I don't know) there's no viable tool to develop shaders 
and immediately see output, not having to compile each time.

The old shader builder, requires linking/compiling, to my memory, and besides 
that has crashes on trivial shaders for ages. On researching that, I ran into a 
post on a developer list (probably the OpenGL list) where an apple employee 
supplied a more current project. So, that's pretty rough, and unless I'm 
missing something, qc is all that apple has given developers for shader 
testing/creation that currently works.
