I'm not sure if this is the kind of answer you are looking for; xscreensaver is a really really old application and there are plenty of better ones, some likely do have the kind of features you and awod are looking for. I personally use kde which does this all. It has a "lock automatically (x min)" separate from "require password after locking (x seconds)" and "dim screen", "turn off screen" etc are all separately configurable.
