You are right. But ... starting from RFCs is just like reinventing the wheel. I would better need a schematic with a microcontroller (PIC or Atmel) and the programs in assembler. I'm not a beginner but I don't have enough time to play. I prefer using SNTP because I need to check the 123 port as an ordinary client. There is a tcp/ip stack implemented on PIC16f877 and 452 micocontrollers and I think there are some fans who develloped such a gadget already.
