Random thoughts - sleep/hibernate mode on the client? Extreme/botched interrupt coalescing on the client's NIC? Preferential treatment of ICMP messages by the client or server TCP/IP stack? Preferential treatment of ICMP messages by the Cisco switch (ISTR some issues with NFS mounts over UDP on older Cisco switches hitting some throttle)?
