Hi,

I was a meat eater until about your age too, it's been eight years now. The PETA site has a lot of info on this and they have footage of how factory-farmed animals live, hen factories, etc, and you can get a free copy of their vegetarian starter kit http://www.peta.org/about/faq-veg.asp. I know a popular book is diet for a small planet.

You might want to start by getting a veggie cookbook and change a few meals a week to see how you liek it. I like The Meatless Gourmet: Easy Lowfat Favorites and The Meatless Gourmet: Favorite Recipes from Around the World, they both have easy to make recipes using ordinary ingredients.

Good luck!

Dear Group,

I understand this is a group for recipe exchange but I would like to
find some help on my queries below and have been unsuccesful in
finding a decent forum to discuss them in so I was hoping some of you
could contribute towards them since they affect most vegetarians in
some way.

I have recently given considerable thought to becoming a vegetarian,
I have pondered over being one since I was about 13, but I am 22 now
and have rcently considered this issue in light of some disturbing
images I saw on TV over animal testing (a monkey with some of its
brain exposed!!!) and on battery chickens and now feel I can
successfully plan my own diet. The reason for wanting to be a
vegetarian is partly logic, it is not logical to destroy one life to
support another imo, also of compassion over the disgusting living
conditions battery farm chickens have to be put through amongst other
animals.

I dont think I will have a problem switching to being a vegetarian
(as some people I know are suggesting it will be a big lifestyle
change lmao) because I am not the type to look at a BBQ and
think "oh, I'd love to bite into one of those juicy burgers" lol.
However, I have in thinking about this issue over the last two days
had some curious thoughts over what I may or may not eat on my
grounds for not eating meat and whether or not for example I may wear
leather shoes (I dont recall seeing any decent shoes for example of
any other material... btw - this reminds me someone recently
suggested I am over analytical which I think is quite true ;o)

If I am going to be against killing and eating cows for example over
the logic as suggested, then killing a cow for its leather is even
less justified. Also, is it ok to say I dont eat cow on the basis it
is not a prefered flavour since I am not aware of whether or not cows
are treated poorly??

Have any of you advice on where I may read about what people in the
vegetarian world are saying about these issues? Or places where I may
discuss this logically?

Jonathan
