First: synchronicity. A translator worked on a translation, and didn't see his work in svn straight away, because (since it is quite a bit of work) I only synchronised translations every 3 weeks or so. Second: translate-toolkit issues. po2ts from translate-toolkit had a serious bug in the version that was available in the version that was available when I joined Wengo (subsequently fixed) that mangled whitespace. So doing the sync required lots of hand-holding. With the bug fix, the .ts files no longer added extra whitespace in text elements - nor did they add whitespace anywhere else, so we had to re-sync the .ts files with Linguist to generate consistent files that showed correct diffs (only strings changed between syncs). This just meant running "make translate" IIRC, but we had to discover that this worked, and before that I was loading & resaving files in Linguist by hand... Third: Linguist issues. We still had issues, because if the person converting was using Linguist 4.3 instead of 4.2 to reformat the .ts files, extra content was added, resulting in a big but meaningless diff. Fourth: synchronicity 2: when UI strings changed and translations changed we got messy conflicts, as you can imagine. Fifth: synchronicity 3: One language's translation was done by someone from Wengo, directly in the .ts file, so you had to remember to leave that one out of every update. Sixth: Reliability. You couldn't be sure that the translation you were downloading was good - anyone could change strings, and we had several occasions of translators unhappy because they updated and got "bad" translations in their wengophone. Launchpad didn't have any revision control which allowed things like easily backing out all of the translations made by a certain person, or returning to a known state at a certain date. I may be forgetting others, but these are the ones I remember.
