I guess you'd know about this then. I have an old 98 laptop with the following synthesizers:

Roland VSC
Microsoft GS wavetable
Ess FM Synthesizer
Ess MPU401

THe ess fm synthesizer... well it reminds me a bit of a gameboy, lol. The mpu synth only works in media player, but is actually not a bad synth. It won't put any sound out in qws. Do you have any clue what this is? What did you mean by "If nothing is connected to it"?

Simon

hey everyone. i am having trouble using the qws. i turned the
metronome on, but i cant hear it through my sound card.

What device is it coming out of? Try alt, o, m, and you might be surprised. It's possibly going nowhere, or to the Microsoft GS synth which perhaps isn't working. Alt O, M, brings up the metronome dialog which will probably tell you some interesting things. Maybe it's going to MPU401 or iquivelent midi port, in which case if nothing is connected to it, might suggest why you'd get no sound.
