When you use step recording, you must press f11 to open the on-screen
keyboard if that's how you're inputting the music. So you'd go to step
record or use the shortcut key, choose the lengths, and press f11 and start
keying the music in.
Personally I've found that it's a lot quicker and easier to use an external
midi or usb keyboard, but if what you're interested in is not rhythmically
very involved you can probably survive on qwerty. At any rate, it's a good
way to test things out and find out if you want to go further.
