Hi Ivan,
If you are using the Microsoft Wave Table, I have had issues with that synth for quite awhile when I was using it. Try playing a file in windows Media or some other player, and then try to play it in QWS. I even had to play a file in both programs at once, then stop one to get it working with QWS. However, one time I pressed control y to redo something, not knwoing it would active synchro start, which then will not play the files when pressing space bar. Go to the play menu and make sure that's turned off. I'd advise you get a keyboard as you were planning. Even if you wanted to use software synths, you'd be fighting a battle. But if keyboards aren't an option right now, here are my thoughts on the software synths I've seen. SFZ and Timidity are both soundfont synths, Timidity is a synth driver and SFZ is a vst. They work but SFZ doesn't respond to note velocities as well as others do which may present problems, and the chorus is terrible. Timidity has its fair share of problems like awful chorus, and only able to use the standard drum set, at least on my and my friend's machines. Synth Font is good but it's harder to use and doesn't have any midi effects, you'll have to use VST for those which I have never done within Synth Font. Overall the Yamaha SYXG50 is your best bet if you can get ahold of a full version. Yamaha didn't make it available after they discontinued it and it's ashame they didn't, for 25 or 35 dollars it was probably the best synth you'd get from them for the money and many people still use it because it's fully xG compatible and has many memorable sounds in it.
Hopefully I have helped at least a little bit. Good luck!

Subject: QWS List playing midi files

Hi Joe,

Many thanks for your reply re my query playing midi files with QWS. I don't

actually have any synths connected to my PC. With the original QWS program, I could just open a midi and play it using the spacebar. I could also delete instruments and carry out other tasks in QWS. Once I had finished changing a midi file that I had downloaded from Internet, I could then record the midi as it was playing then finally save it as a wav or mp3 file to play through an amp as a backing track.

As yet, I don't have a keyboard of any kind as I play guitar. However, I am seriously looking at one and that's the reason for installing QWS again. I hope this explanation makes more sense of what I have been doing and want to achieve?

Many thanks
Ivan
