Yep, I agree with that. Except some of those technical specs are very complicated... And, another thing with volume and expression. I believe originally, as you said, volume is for setting the main mix of a track. but, expression was probably supposed to be more similar to a velocity controler. So, if you have a brass section, as you played at lower and higher velocities the sound might get darker or brighter. But the same was probably meant to happen with expression too. I only know of one synth that actually did this, and I haven't thoroughly tested it to see if it works. It is an FM synth that allows you to make your own GM set. I was messing around with it, and although my programming experience is below zero, I still got it to do some things like what I described. And let's not even get into aftertouch...

Hi,

Just to add to this conversation: the Google list of controllers is
good as reference, but the best way to find out what your keyboard
supports is to read the MIDI Implemnetation section of the manual for
your keyboard. It's generally right at the back.

There's also a general list at the back of the QS manual of some
common controllers.

Two good reasons to check the MIDI Implementation Chart: first it will
list which controllers are actually supported and second it will note
any special cases, e.g. specific situations where the controllers
don't work because of a setting for example.

Looking at controllers, you may also find that certain pairs of
controllers might appear to do the same thing: in particular: 7 volume
and 11 expression. I believe the idea is that 7 should be used to set
the main mix levels andyou can then use 11 within the track to cause
volume adjustments.

Hope this helps.

James.

hi nicole
many thanks, thats a good start. it would be useful to find a complete set
of numbers. I omitted to state i am using a roland exr5 keyboard.

Both are correct -- there are standard numbers for certain things that are in common use. Sustain pedal is designated as number 64, for example. That
said, any manufacturer is not required to use these numbers in their
products if they don't want to.

Here are the ones I know off the top of my head. Note that 0-63 are
usually
for continuous controllers while 64-127 are switches. Also, some of the
last
few numbers have other uses for things like changing the MIDI response
mode,
sending a tune request, and turning Local off.

0. Bank Select
1. Modulation Wheel
2. Breath Controller
5. Portamento value
7. Volume
10. Pan
64. Sustain pedal
65. Sostenuto pedal

I'd welcome any other ones anyone can remember, as I'd like to compile a
list of the common ones. I know I'm missing things like Expression pedal,
Reverb switch, Portamento switch, and the registered parameter controls.
I've also forgotten the controller used by Ensoniq to switch to different
sub-patches using their two buttons.

Hi all
still getting to grips with QWS. amazed. can someone explain how i can add
sustain to a bar i have already recorded. I assume it's something to do
with

controllers. Is there a list of what controllers do what or does it depend on the instrument? would be grateful for any advice. many thanks in hope,
brian
