Sorry if I was not clear when I said about putting in numbers like 174, that
number was entered in the keyboard, not into the properties dialog. Out of
QWS, I dial it and the keyboard's sound comes as music box, through the
keyboard. With QWS open, however, if I choose this same number on the
keyboard, the sound played via the computer is string ensemble and, of
course, when I check the properties, the number sent was 48, and not 10 as I
would expect and the bank was 112. I thought that, if I put the correct
instrument number in my keyboard's dial, it would send the correct midi
message even though the midi standards went only up to 127... Of course if I
were to choose the same instrument on the computer, I would put in 10 for
music box and 73 for flute if I remember James' tutorial correctly, but
still by what I remember from reading my keyboard's manual these numbers, in
it, are 174 and, well I said it wrong the first time, 092 respectively...
I think I made myself a bit clear now...
André.

Also note that some instruments and devices only go from 0 to 127 for banks,
as they only use controller 0, the MSB amount, to change banks. The free
software synthesizer Proteus VX is one of these.

Hi folks,
A couple of things here:
First, some instruments will transmit the program/bank numbers when you
select sounds on the keyboard. If you have the Track Properties dialog
open, QWS can recognise this info and will automatically fill in the values
in the Program and Bank.
Note however that not all keyboards will send this information. Consult
your keyboard's manual.
Second: a reminder that in MIDI, many values go from 0-127. So, if you
enter a value such as 174 or 192 into the Program box, this is invalid data.
Program goes from 0-127, bank goes from 0-16383.
Also, have a look in the List Archive, I think Nicole made some interesting
remarks about how you can build instrument lists. Information about the
list is at the bottom of every list email.
I hope this helps.
With best regards,
James.

I was testing with a Yamaha PSR-e413 keyboard and at the same time, leaving
the properties dialogue open and, if I select instruments on the keyboard,
the numbers (and sounds) change... The problem is, for example, that I put
in 174 which, if I remember correctly, should come out as music box... And
it played strings. 192 should have been the flute, but the wrong sound came
out too. So I am not sure about how the data is being sent/received between
the keyboard and QWS, but at least the instruments (and banks) change...

Hi friends
Is there a way how you can select a specific sound on your keyboard,
and then let qws pick up the patch and program number automatically - sort
of
the reverse of going down the instrument list in the track properties
dialogue?
I have many sounds on my keyboard which are not represented on the
instrument list,
but I don't know their bank/program numbers!
Thanks again
David
