Hi, thank you very, very much. Yes I have the manual and it does have a
patch chart and it's quite accessible so I will try all the below.
I had a suspicion that 0 was omni but thanks so much for that. I put the
piano on channel 1 but will definitely try the gm set before I dive into
something as seemingly complex as creating my own instrument definition
but if I do I'll submit it of course so others don't need to do so.

converter, like PDF to TXT, to convert it to something OCR'd. But if you can
find a patch list you can make your own INST file for it without much problem.
That said, if it's GM compatible then you can know a nice set of things. For
one thing you're going to be able to use the GM sound set, which is a standard
definition file for QWS. Second, chances are good it responds to all 16 MIDI
channels, with the drums on channel 10. So try things out by pressing ALT+Enter
and changing the MIDI channel to 1. Then set your instrument definition in QWS
to GM for the port in question and press V until you get violin, then arrow
down to strings or Massed strings, depending on what the particular file says.
Press enter. Now press shift+Home and press the space bar. You should hear
string sounds instead of grand piano sounds. If you don't then play with the
program numbers and find out what you hear. This will also prove that you
don't have a GM compatible instrument. Also, if you hear nothing then there's a
MIDI channel issue, and you'll want to use the MIDI channel entry in the track
properties to find out what plays. Note that many tracks will sound like a
piano -- that's because that channel hasn't gotten a program change yet, but
you want to find out what channels are live.
Why does it always work with channel 0? Because QWS uses channel 0 for Omni
mode, so it'll send on all 16 channels when the channel is set to 0. Change it
off this to do any real troubleshooting.

Hi all, ok, have been using qws for quite a while but really only using it
mostly with softwaare synths etc and hadn't used it for a few versions.
Have a new yamaha dgx660 which I love so decided to give it a try with qws.
It has usb midi and qws can see it as portable grand so I set it up for both
input and output.
What I'm wanting to do is this.
I laid down a piano track which went very well, no problem.
What I'd like to do now is overlay some strings. Is there an easy way to do
this?
I'm quite comfortable with reading manuals but don't see any documentation on
how this can be done, i.e. when you set up a new track everything is basically
set to 0 in properties.
So I guess:
1. does anyone have an instrument file for the dgx660 or any of the dgx series,
I'm assuming they are similar?
2. Has anyone had any experience with these or similar instruments, for
example, will assigning theh instrument s a general midi instrument work, docs
for the 660 say it supports gm/gs and a subset of xg.
3. if not to any of the above, how do I tell qws what patch number I'm using
for my strings on the keyboard.
4. Last but not least, am I missing something in not being able to find any
documentation on this because I'm quite happy to go document diving in fact
it's a good wind down before bed etc.

create something from the ground up for someone very dear to me and I'd like this to

Qws looks like the right tool for this job if I can only learn how to make it fit,
