The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre announces its course C-03: Myths And Reality: The Legal Framework Of Modern Peacekeeping, DATES: 8th to the 19th of October 2001. Content: Peacekeeping and Post-reconstruction operations take place within a framework of international organization Charters and bodies of international law and conventions. It is then clear that a general understanding of international public, humanitarian, and human rights law, and the issues that face these instruments is essential in the conduct of international peacekeeping efforts. C03 describes and explores relevant issues arising from the continued evolution of the major areas of international law affecting peacekeeping. Main Sections: - Conceptual Framework of Modern Peacekeeping - Operational Imperatives of Law - Legal Nature of Mandates - Rules of Engagement - Public International Law - International Human Rights Law - Children's issues - International Humanitarian Law - War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity, Grave breeches of the Geneva Convention - ICRC - Refugee Law and the Internally Displaced - International Criminal Justice: Context and institutions. - The legal basis of intervention - Establishment of the Rule of Law: Post-Conflict context - Peacekeeping and Law: The role of Military Legal Advisor - Status of UN and NGO personnel. - Case scenarios exercises. - Academic Credits In addition to the certificate presented upon completion of a course, participants have the opportunity to receive academic credit from selected universities in Canada and in the United States. The Canadian Forces recognize the value of the PPC courses and have incorporated them into the professional development curriculum. The fee for a two-week course is of Cdn $2300. At the same time, the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre offers the Lester B. Pearson Memorial Scholarship to deserving individuals. These scholarships support the full spectrum of the peacekeeping partnership and applications from university students and non-government organizations are encouraged. Financial assistance is tailored to mutual need and full scholarship may be made available in some circumstances. If you wish to apply for a scholarship your application must include a Curriculum Vitae together with a letter of request for financial assistance and the course application form. You should include, in your letter of request, an indication of the amount of assistance you would require. The scholarship committee determines the degree of assistance provided.
