ODBC is a software layer that aims to create a uniform API for the programmer among different variations of SQL databases (though it doesn't entirely succeed). RODBC gives R access to that API. You have to use OS-specific utilities outside of R to link ODBC Data Source Names to specific ODBC-to-DB "drivers". The alternatives are usually much more specific to the DB back end, with potential ability to take advantage of DB- specific features, and disadvantages of being more closely tied to that particular software. There is a mailing list (R-sig-db) where you should ask more specific questions about how R deals with these non-R- specific APIs, but each of the R packages maps to much more extensive documentation about those APIs that you will need to be familiar with in order to make progress with them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeff Newmiller The ..... .....
