I listened to "Evil Robot Monkey" (and thought it was actually a really good
piece of spec fic, quite contra Jonathan), but none of the others.

I hadn't been reading any fiction to speak of, but decided I ought to for
reasons of mental health. Alas, I made the choice about a month ago of
tackling *Infinite Jest** to that end, and from what people have told me
that's pretty much a *commitment* during which more or less no other fiction
gets read. My experience so far bears that out: at my current rate I
estimate that I might be done with it in a couple of weeks.

--
**IJ*, by the way, quite apart from being "arguably" SF -- as I've
characterized it in the past -- is definitely SF, and pretty solid SF at
that, at least in the trophic sense. Of course it's always shelved with
"literature" and not SF, just as *Grendel* is always and *Once and Future
King* usually shelved with literature and not fantasy. Which reminds me of
the answer somebody we'd call famous -- I think it was either Ballard or
Sterling, but might have been Chabon -- gave when asked something about SF
as a genre. "Genres are really just ways of grouping books so you can sell
them more easily." (I can recommend it highly, btw, but only if you've got
the patience for 1200 pages in highly subjective-voiced prose, about half of
which concerns the pathetic misadventures of junkies in Boston.)
