No.  It means what it says: "uniquely determined" isn't quite the same
thing as "unique".

I guess I don't understand this.  If it is not the same, how is it different?
The way I read the text is that the syntactic datum determines a unique datum value, but now you seem to be saying that this unique datum value is not unique!?
