For what it's worth:

I agree that any subset of three that includes John Cowan and Jonathan
Rees would make a fine Scheme Language Steering Committee, for the same
reasons that Will stated.

Some additional random thoughts on the nominee list, confining myself to
people I have met or corresponded with personally:

I consider myself fortunate to have worked with Kent Dybvig on R6RS.
Kent (as project chair) was instrumental in getting R6RS done at all.
Debating with Kent was consistently a pleasant and often illuminating
experience for me, even when we disagreed on technical issues (which we
often did) - this is a rare thing in the Scheme community.

Chris Hanson has greatly helped me (and the other maintainers) maintain
Scheme 48, by contributing a wonderfully compact and readable bignum
implementation, and by running the Scheme 48 web site for many years.
I've often appreciated his technical and procedural insight. I'm also
an admirer of MIT Scheme, whose code base I first studied in 1991 or so.

I worked with Olin Shivers on scsh, one of the most useful tools to come
out of the Scheme community, and have immensely enjoyed our
conversations and discussions over the years. I admire his technical
insight on a diverse range of topics, which has been extremely useful in
my own work; his work on flow analysis has continued to be
groundbreaking since Olin started working on it.

I enjoyed working with Anton van Straaten on R6RS: I appreciate that he
filled the vacant post on the committee at very short notice, provided a
much-needed voice of moderation on many occasions, and helped get the
report off the ground in several other ways.
