It's not clear to me what you mean by "default out-of-the-box mode",
but the REPL you get when you start the 'mzscheme' executable at the
command line is not fully R5RS compliant - at a minimum, it doesn't
have bindings for `transcript-on' and `transcript-off'.  ;)
