I don't think "jewel-like" quite means "minimal."  If the list procedures
other than cons, car, cdr, set-car!, and set-cdr! end up in an accessory
package that wouldn't kill me, but append and list and map (e.g.) have
proven their worth and their coherence and, I think, even their beauty.
I wish filter were in the standard, too.

I grew up at the MIT AI Lab in the '60s.  My Lisp is the Lisp of symbolic
information processing.  I'm pleased that it's turned out to be useful for
other things, too, and I'm proud that so much of our understanding of
programming languages in general grew out of that tradition.  But I'm not
ready to leave the tradition behind.

Maybe y'all just have to wait until my generation dies off.  That's fairly
often how consensus decision-making works out for the Society of Friends,
I understand, and I believe they consider that a strength, not a weakness;
their elders never have to feel pushed aside.
