In my experience the buffering of the station runs out pretty quickly. So if you put it in standby for 5-10 seconds while testing in a shop you may get the "pause" effect, but I'd be surprised if it did that if you had it in standby for several minutes or hours, which I would think is a more typical use-case.
Or instead of pausing the station you can stop it (press and hold the pause button) before hitting the power button.
