I don't fully get the point. Is your idea to bring your own Radio to
your friend's house? I mean... with all the hassle to enter a WiFi-code
on the Radio that must be much more difficult than just connecting your
iPhone to soma analog input...

But if your friends _do_ already have a Squeezebox, they need to operate
it themselves, don't they? And then they will surely quickly find out
that this works much better with a local server.

Let's get this straight: for a new product nobody would propose
something fully dependent on an external server in your home anymore and
in fact most new projects for Squeezebox-compatible hardware that I've
seen recently do come with the server included (like with the Touch,
just that even cheap hardware is much more capable these days). But you
can't change the old devices and the Squeezebox system as it is requires
a server. Changing that would mean developing a whole new product which
would no longer be compatible.
