In general, aac and mp3 (and even flac) can support icy metadata in the stream, where the server indicate that every N bytes sent, a potential metadata update can be found, with the stream artist, title/album and very rarely the artwork url. Most players dont support the artwork url, unfortunately. This icymetadata interval of N bytes is above and independent of underlying codec.
