For as long as I can remember there has been a "programmer shortage". The
global financial crisis will force many consumers and businesses to reduce
their expenditure. I don't however think it will result in a reduction of
opportunities for wealth creation through innovation, particularly in web
applications.

It's easy to slip into The Pie Fallacy, "You can't make the pie larger".
There are many opportunities out there to reduce costs/increase revenue that
haven't been explored because we've been too busy. When the customers stop
banging on our doors we may need to take our ideas to them. In many cases,
we're in a better position to see the easy gains customers won't know
possible.

Will more consumers turn to the web to save money? Australians never took to
mail order like the Americans did. Maybe more people will buy their pens
online for 40% off? http://justwrite.com.au/

Will smaller businesses turn to SaaS or bespoke web applications to reduce
costs, and increase revenue?

Will companies want to reduce their CapEx by making use of Infrastructure as
a Service?

Innovation in technology drives economic growth and is key to wealth
creation. We need to think more about growing the our pie by offering value
to clients who don't realize what's possible.
