I'd never noticed the mentor list - it's a really cool idea.  Do people
make use of it?

Perhaps this is premature and unnecessary generalisation but i've been
thinking for some time about building a kind of LET
system<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_exchange_trading_system> for
this kind of thing where you would be able to register skills you could
teach, skills you could learn, etc.  The teaching would take place remotely
so that anyone anywhere could get involved.  Something that would always
remain entirely free, and open source. It should encourage complete newbies
who feel they have nothing to teach yet.  Of course it would look
incredibly awesome - so beautiful and inspiring that you could not help but
donate your skills to some other worthy stranger.

Has something like this been done before (it seems like a pretty obvious
idea)?  Are the shattered remains of the foolhardy individuals who have
attempted this strewn across the internet?
