Thanks everyone for the info.

I did notice the RailsGirls and RailsCamp hardware ideas. I'll be
interested to see what other things come up as the safe cash margin is
determined and future funding takes shape.

The largest Ruby conference I've been to was RubyKaigi 2011, which was a
great conference and had a ticket price of around $75.

I agree that RailsCamp is more accessible than most conferences in terms of
price, and because it happens fairly locally and frequently, but I actually
find it to be a more intimidating/overwhelming format than a conference.
I've been to several RailsCamps and enjoyed them, but I have found events
with a bit more structure easier to get into, particularly as a newbie to
the code and community.

CampJS early this year seemed to strike a good balance between scheduled
talks, impromptu discussions and freeform hacking, while maintaining the
camp-style location and accommodation that I know many do enjoy.

For me, and I'm sure many others, the biggest incentive to go to a
potentially intimidating event would be to have the chance to go with
someone I know. Reduced cost comes after that. If our goal is to welcome
and encourage newcomers who feel unsure about fitting into the community or
enjoying the event format (or content) I think free tickets help, but maybe
it would be even better to give out pairs of tickets?

Cheers,
Chris
