The workers are employees of ChevronTexaco's unit Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI), which operates in Sumatra's Riau province and is the country's biggest oil contractor. CPI's production has fallen from about 760,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 1998 to about 506,000 bpd at present due to declining production, obligatory divestment of a major field, acts of sabotage, theft and demonstrations. ExxonMobil, which operates natural gas fields in nearby Aceh province, has dismissed more than 1,000 of its workers this year due to falling production. ChevronTexaco has been accused of operating a scam between 1970-2000 in which it paid high prices for Indonesian oil to gain huge tax credits to the tune of about $3 billion, while actually obtaining additional oil for free. ---- Back to the previous discussion about salary between being expat in Indonesia and local. This Caltex lay-off should be seen as a normal thing to happen to any business. However, I know there are good 'technical' people in Caltex, only that they do not have confidence whether they are good enough for the current market. For these good technical people, I DO NOT see this lay-off is becoming their concern, I see some of them got offer already from both in country and overseas. Only for those who have been too enjoy with comfort live, mainly those who work in HR, they tend to forget that actually their job security is in danger. They think that Caltex is guarantee for life.
