I agree on the adjustable masking darkness, but I like the handle-less crop
window. It gives a more natural view of the end result without it being
cluttered up by the grab handles.

It is currently. Both can be undone.. even across multiple editing sessions
(which is a wonderful thing). Once you right click and do a crop (or
straighten), an additional right-click item is added ('uncrop' and/or
'unstraighten'). Which will undo that operation. I'm not sure if there are
additional adjustment operations that will make the undos go away (maybe a
second cropping? Never tried.)
