The GUI and the bulk of the processing to be performed are pure R:BASE,
and may be entirely R:BASE; but I'm exploring the possibility that I may
have to call specialized routines to expose that one needle buried
within a universe of haystacks.

Most newer programming languages provide string manipulation
capabilities. Here is a good comparison:

From what I have read PERL and Python seem to be good at string
manipulation but the general consensus seems to be to use a language
with which you are already familiar and also one that will make it
easier to build the GUI which is a lot more complicated, if you are
building the GUI as well. Also, consider which programming language
will be around in the future; many become really popular and then they
are replaced and it is back to square one.
