Thanks for the suggestion.  I think what you said about the file server
is the key.  When this has happened before, it seems the problem is
cared for overnight.  Of course that would be when everyone logs off and
the server does its backups.  I will talk to the administrator and see
if that can be cared for before tonight.

When you connect to R:Base in single-user mode -- or even as the sole
user in multi-user mode -- R:Base should clear those resource issues for
you.

If that's not happening, it's possible that a hidden R:Base session or
some rebooted machine somewhere still holds a lock on the database
files.  To cure this you can go to the file server and use the console
to find and clear the locks on the files in question.  Or simply reboot
the file server if that's feasible.
