Thanks for all the input. It has been most frustrating, trying to find a problem on a program that had been working flawlessly! No change in the file name format at all. It simply quit working. But Dennis and Emmitt are correct. Here is what I can recap, although I do not understand why or when this changed. (Other than it quit working Saturday) The ??? place holders work as expected on filenames that are 8 characters or less in length OR that are longer than 8 characters IF you do not use a ? for the 7th and 8th spot. For example Dir Check?.??? will return files with 6 characters in the name. Dir CheckAL???.??? will return only files with 10 characters in the name. However Dir CheckA??.??? Dir CheckA?????????????.??? will return all files starting with CheckA regardless of the number of characters. If the 7th & 8th character is a ? placeholder, the command will not work as expected. A ? in the 7th spot by itself is OK or in the 8th spot by itself works as well. Put one in both the 7th and 8th spot and it will return all regardless of length. (Both at the command prompt and R>, so it is a MS issue evidently.) I looks like it only work as a filepicker. Also, I don’t get the same output format from the MS cmd prompt. I was getting a format very similar to what I got at the R> prompt. Now I only see the long names. The wildcard works the same way though. If I use ?? in an extension only, or early enough in the filename such that it avoids the shortname kludge used by DOS, it works as expected. You can set the default directory option to include the wildcard you have been using. You then could loop through the control records and test the position of your period for each record If the record is what you expect you can create an explicit rename command and execute that. This will probably be slower than your original, but it should be bullet proof against these kind of changes. Definitely different than I recall. If this change is at the OS level, and R:BASE is simply calling the OS services, it could explain the difference from what we remember. In any case it worked before and I have tried various combinations this morning, without success) This code has worked without issue for many months. I have several hundred archive files that prove the rename command worked in the past. Now it does not. All file names start out such as RC20090801.001, RC20090801.002, RC20090801.003 etc. The rename command should rename them to RC20090801sent_0824.001, RC20090801sent_0824.002, RC20090801sent_0825.003 and has done so in the past for hundreds of files. This weekend it stopped working. The voldfile RC??????.??? now picks up all files that start with RC, even if the filename has more that 8 characters. This did not use to happen. I.E. previously the above voldfile would not include any RC20090801sent_0824.001 files as they were longer than 8 characters. It seems like the single character wild card is not working now for some reason. I have checked the single character wildcard and it is set properly.
