When I did my ODBC connection to MS Access I did need to change my character
settings to confirm with ODBC standards it should be availbe in the help
file.

I believe MS SQL is the same in this matter.

This was 4 to 5 years ago so I cant really recall what changes I made, but
if you stay on present R:Base standard you are on the safe side. 

An other hint maybe the help was rather in Ottero

Thanks for the comments I've received.  We will be evaluating them all.
There are already programs written that use an RBase database with the old
character settings of   "  *  and ?  .    Would we be able to use those
programs against a SQL Server database?  In other words, does SS have the
standard character settings that our RBase program must adhere to?    Or do
we need to change the programs to  '  %  and _
