If it is all rtf I would use varchar, but in the future and if anybody includes a Picture attachment then varbit.
Personally I think of it like ftp ascii or binary? I opt binary 99.9% of the time. May offer a bit more overhead but I am more comfortable on my clicks. (I am sure I will get beat up on this statement, but so goes it.
