Dan, VARCHAR is the ideal data type to store RTF or Plain Text beyont the limit of 4096 characters.
Take a look at the R:Docs for sample table and examples. While using the data in reports, make sure to use Advanced DB Rich Text control to take advantage of formatted text and all advanced features.
