use of the word console had never 'registered' with me as being fixed width,
but it does now.)

No, there are plenty of fixed-width fonts.  Look for the word "Console" as
part of the name, that's usually a tip-off that the font is fixed-width.
Lucida Console is a generally available Microsoft-supplied Windows console
font supposedly optimized for screen use.
