I know your pain, Larry.  I have the same nightmare.
I've got Reals used where INTs would make more sense and Reals where I would 
like to convert to double for the reasons stated by Bill.

I never use REAL.  I prefer NUMERIC.  But this system goes back to DOS 
pre-history (the original version was actually carved on stone using the 
RChisel editor) and it would be a nightmare to have to change now.

There was an inline fix this morning that cured the problem.

I haven't created a REAL datatype column since 1989, and changed many former 
REALs to DOUBLE just to avoid these issues.
