If you are still working on this and want to put more effort into it,
you may want to look at SpinRite 6.  (www.grc.com)  It is quite good at
hard drive repair.  Of course, running this does not help if the OS
files went bad and not the hard drive.

On a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop with XP (about 6 years old), the 
rather ominous message probably indicates the hard drive is toast. I 
can hit the F2 key to get to the set up screen where I can look 
elsewhere for a bootable O/S. (It currently says, "Hard Drive: None")
My hunch is that even if all else is OK, probably not worth replacing 
a hard drive?
