(GETVAL('GetVolumeID','driveletter'))
I'll bet each device has a unique VOLUME name

Can each scanner be set up to write a unique filename?
That way, you can tell which format to use based on the available filename.

Both of these scanners are recognized, but they both show up as the E:\ drive
(only one would be plugged in). I would like my program to be able somehow to
distinguish which physical device it is and just didn't know if there was an
ENVVAL that would trap an identifier of a removeable disk. Sounds like perhaps
the blob editor is able to "trap" an identifier, I'd love to know what that is!
Both of these scanners do batch scanning, and the batches are saved as csv
files on the devices. So after scaning you just plug it in and RBase sees the
scanner as if it's a drive, so I just load my table from the file on the
scanner. Easy Peasy!

Karen,
The scanner and driver need to be installed so they are recognized, on the
newer Windows this happens when you plug in the device. I know you can set a
default printer but I am not sure you can define default scanner.
I use the Blob editor to do scanning and if you look under File>>Select Source
you should see all the available scanners listed by their correct names; my
list even shows an old one that I removed and fully uninstalled but somehow
cannot get it to completely go away; probably stored in the registry somewhere.
BTW, how do you do the scanning? Are you using a plugin? Blob Editor?

Subject: [RBASE-L] - "Name" of a USB device?
At one of my clients, they plug in a USB scanner and it is recognized as a
removeable disk. So my RBase program simply retrieves a file E:\Scanner.txt
They are going to buy a different scanner which they will also plug into the
same USB port and import into the same RBase program, but the file will be in a
different format. So what I would like to do is automatically "recognize" what
device is plugged in. Is there any kind of environment value that I can
retrieve that distinguishes one USB device from another, some kind of "name?
Otherwise I'll just have to ask them to select the device from a list. Would
be cool if I could automate it though!
