Tom did you try something like:

C:
CD \
MD RBtemp$
CD RBtemp$

RBASE -R -C -Z999..... 
CONNECT D:\DBNAME READ

You need the Read flag so R:base does not try to write to the db on cd.
I have accessed R:base databases from CD.
