Hi Jenna;

There are obviously reasons why your client does not wish to use RTango on
their servers and my suspicion is that perhaps that Linux has been chosen
for web services.

We have recently moved to Linux for ALL web based services and are currently
using PHP in this environment. PHP is fairly easily learned (much easier
than ASP) and you should not have too many problems picking it up. I would
recommend PHP over PERL, due to PERL being a much harder language to learn.

We have been able to get connections to our R:BASE database using an ODBC
Bridge product for Linux, however I have not tested this completely enough
to be able to provide an oppinion.

I also noticed some replies in relation to MySQL. I have looked at this
product extensively and it simply doesnt "cut the mustard" in comparison to
R:BASE.

1). MySQL Does have a prompt similar to the R:> Prompt. However, the key
buffer is extremely poor and R:BASE provides a very nice output format to
the mighty R:> Prompt.

2) MySQL currently does not support Sub-Selects, Stored Procedures and
Triggers, Foreign Keys, (and wait for this one): VIEWS. This alone was
enough to stop me looking any further into thei free product.

3) Admin of mysql is very poor, having to remember many executable names
to achive simple tasks. The R:BASE interface provides a "one-stop shop" for
all database operations.

4) There is a 3rd party GUI administration interface available for MySQL,
however it still has a long way to go before it can actually administer an
entire MySQL installation.

5) The MySQL data dictionary is virtually non existant

All I can say to Razzak in relation to R:BASE for Linux is...:

  "Bring it On Razzak"

...because if MySQL is currently the "Buzz Word" in Linux Database
solutions, The Linux community is in for a big shock when R:BASE for Linux
is released.

Couple R:BASE's existing speed, flexibility and stabilty with the fact that
Linux is a very, very lean O/S and you may just find that MySQL will simply
be "too scared" to post R:BASE benchmark tests on it's website!

Kindest Regards

David Ballantyne

Subject: R:BASE Web Front End

A client of ours would like us to develop a web application using their
existing R:BASE database as a backend. They know they will have to upgrade
to the current version of R:BASE and obtain Oterro to provide ODBC access.

We will be developing a fairly straightforward real-time inventory system
for their downstream clients. Their IT staff does NOT want to install Tango
on their systems for a variety of reasons. Even though we have passed on
RBTI's recommendation and praise. They have informed us that we can use
either PHP or PERL as the development language. They are aware that we are
not familiar with these languages and that on the other hand their coders
have no expirence with databasing. So this is a learning expirence all
around which both sides are looking forward to.

While I know their preferences, I would like to ask this noble body of minds
if they have ever worked with PHP or PERL and if there were problems doing
so? If so are there known work arounds? Is one language "easier" than the
other in general or specific? Does one have a better development
environment?

Thanks in advance

Jenna
