It varies from phone system to phone system as to what will actually do the
transfer. These people doing this kind of stuff may do some research first
and figure out what kind of phone system and service you have first. This
way they know the exact right sequence of buttons to press to accomplish
this.

The 0 just gives you the operator, the next trick is to get the person at
your company off of the phone so they don't know what is going on.
Depending on your phone system you may need # or transfer or something else
to do it. I think if you don't have a pbx so you are using centrex service
from your phone provider, the # will drop you off and leave the original
caller connected w/ the operator.

We have PBX, and the # will not do anything, but the Transfer will.

This is the reason why you never want to tell anyone you don't know what
kind of phone system you have. They will call conducting a survey and ask
what kind of system you have. The next thing they may ask what all of your
phone numbers are. If you give them your phone numbers, you can bet your
long distance will get slammed next month.
