Susan,

Are you using the DOS or Windows version of R:base?
You need to set up the MS SQL 2000 odbc connection on your machine.  You 
need to set the data source as a system.  Then you should be able to sattach 
to it from R:base.  With the Windows version of R:base, you can do it right 
off the main menu.  With the DOS version, you have to use the sattach and 
sconnect commands.

I always use Excel to test my odbc data sources to make sure they are set up 
right.  You should be able to go into excel and connect to your odbc data 
source under data/get external data.  Pull a few rows out of the database 
and put it in a spreadsheet to make sure it is working.
